Baltimore, MD - The Club Football team took to the road for the first time in 2022 but also for the first time since the 2019 season. The Pioneers took on the Eagles from Coppin State University, who have always been a contender in the NCFA since their initial debut to the league. The Pioneers traveled down to Baltimore late on Friday night, and were tasked with overcoming adversity early on Saturday. The Pioneers received the opening kickoff in what would be a very windy game. The Pioneers went up early - after a high snap had the Eagles QB accidentally hit his knee on the ground to put the Pioneers up 2-0. The Pioneers got the ball back later in the quarter, when Sophomore QB
Thomas Hurley found Sophomore WR
Mason Mesbah in the back of the endzone for a touchdown. The PAT made the score 9-0.
The teams flipped the field for the second quarter and the Pioneers were tasked with playing into the wind. They were unable to get the ball out of their half of the field, and a mistake was made on punt when the ball bounced off the back of a Pioneers helmet and the Eagles received the ball deep in Pioneer territory. Several plays later, the Eagles found the endzone for their first score of the day. They were able to convert on their 2 point conversion to make the score 9-8 going into halftime.
The Eagles started with the ball in the second half- and after a couple of exchanged punts - the Eagles ended up with the ball on their own 30 yard line. The Eagles spread the field out and their quarterback looked right and threw it where Senior Cornerback
Kenley Pierre jumped in front of it and raced 40 yards for his first career interception and touchdown. Freshman kicker
Mark Aliscio added an extra point to make the score 16-8. This would end up being the final score. The defense limited the Eagles offense to under 150 yards of total offense. Freshmen LB's
Briant Johnson and
Teighan Jeremy stood out as well as Sophomore Linebacker
Gianni Walsh who had 3 tackles and a fumble recovery. Sophomore QB
Thomas Hurley threw for 96 yards, 2 INT's and a touchdown - with 71 of those yards going to Freshman WR
David Berlin.
The Pioneers return home on October 22nd when they face conference rival Clarkson University at home at 1 pm.
