D2 ice hockey secured 2 big conference wins this weekend, taking down Marist College 6-3 on Friday before defeating defending SECHL champions Army 5-1.
SHU came into this weekend looking to bounce back after a close loss to Siena College last week. After a quick goal by Marist in the first 4 minutes the Pioneers bounced back with 5 of their own to close the period. Sophomore Christos Caminis netted 2 to bring his season total to 4 goals in 5 games. Junior Gio Crepaldi, senior Drew Galea, and freshman Jake Abrami all scored their first of the season. Junior Jake Antonucci added to the team's total while keeping the Red Foxes shut out in the second. Marist attempted a comeback with 2 more goals in the third, but were denied the win as SHU hung on to secure the win.
Saturday saw defending SECHL champions Army come to town. The Pioneers dropped both contests against the Black Knights last year 2-1 and were looking to start on a good foot this year. SHU was first on the board with a goal from junior Chad Schneider in the first. Sophomore Matt Milko added to the Pioneer lead with a goal in the second off an assist from senior Mark Garfinkel. Army was finally able to get on the board in the third before SHU added 3 more to ice the win. Sophomore Michael Cardoza and senior Zach Ouladelhadjahmed got their firsts of the season. Milko netted his second of the game shorthanded. Junior Corey Splaine recorded both wins in net as he anchored the team for the 6th straight game.
SHU heads back out on the road this weekend as they take on Bryant University on Sunday, November 6th. Puck drop will be 3pm at the Rhode Island Sports Center.
