D2 Hockey Splits Last Weekend Series Of Fall Semester

12/2 vs. Marist

D2 hockey came away with a big road win against Marist College, in what was a very chippy game. The Pioneers got on the board early when sophomore Christos Caminis put one in the Marist net 2:39 into the first period, becoming the first pioneer to reach the ten goal mark this season. The Pioneers led by one going into the first intermission. Less than a minute into the second period Caminis added to his goal total and the lead. The second period had a combined 24 penalty minutes between the two teams which made most of the period a defensive battle. After the second intermission the Pioneers exploded for a three goal third period. Caminis completed the natural hat trick and second in three games 8:10 into the third giving the pioneers a 3-0 lead before sophomore Michael Cardoza added to the fire making it 4-0 less than a minute later. Senior Drew Galea put the icing on the cake making it 5-0 at 19:31 of the third period. The pioneers set a new season high scoring three power play goals. Eight different skaters recorded a point for the pioneers, three of which recording 3 point nights. Not only did this game see Caminis record his second hat trick of the season, it also saw sophomore goalie Conor Higgins make his season debut. The 5-0 game marked Higgin's first career collegiate win along with his first career shutout making 31 saves.

12/4 vs. UNH

D2 hockey traveled to the University of New Hampshire to square off against the wild cats in what was a closer game than the score showed. Senior Justin Bernhard got the pioneers on the board early with a goal in the first ten min of the game. UNH came back strong capitalizing on a couple of pioneer defensive breakdowns, forcing the pioneers to go into the first intermission down 2-1. The second period was a back and forth period which saw goals from both teams. Junior Nick Chiurazzi scored his first of the season to bring the Pioneers to within one heading into the third period. UNH scored right off the face off to make it 4-2 which proved to be the dagger putting the game out of reach for the pioneers. UNH added an empty netter in the final 30 seconds of the game to send the pioneers home with a loss.

This game marked the last of the semester for the Pioneers, who look to open up next semester in the new Martire Family Arena in a rematch against UNH on January 15.
