Men's D2 ice hockey participated in the Super East Tournament this weekend as the #2 seed, securing them the first round bye. In the semifinals, they met Clarkson University. Earlier this season, SHU took both games against the Golden Knights, 4-0 and 3-1. The Pioneers were first on the board with a goal from junior
Ryan Oechsner off assists from junior
Nick Chiurazzi and senior
Justin Bernhard. Less than 2 minutes later, SHU added to the lead off a tip from sophomore
Matt Milko, his 8
th of the year. About halfway through the second period, Clarkson was able to get on the board to cut the lead to 1 while keeping SHU scoreless. It was a tight third period, with both team getting quality scoring chances but junior goaltender
Corey Splaine kept Clarkson from finding the back of the net to secure the win and advance the Pioneers to the championship.
Sunday, SHU faced conference rival and top seed Army for the league championship. SHU split their previous meetings this season, winning the first matchup 5-1 before dropping the second 5-3. Again, SHU was first to score. In third minute of the game, sophomore
Christos Caminis scored unassisted for his team leading 24
th goal of the season. Army added 2 to close out the period, and the Pioneers were never able to get back in it, eventually dropping the game 5-1. Splaine added 35 more saves, bring his tournament total to 56. This is the highest ever finish for SHU in the Super East Tournament and their first trip to the championship game.
