D2 Goes 1-1 at Northeast Regional Tournament

SHU D2 ice hockey finished the season this past weekend, going 1-1 in the ACHA Northeast Regional Tournament. #9 SHU faced #12 RPI in the opening round on Friday. RPI took both regular season games against SHU so it looked like a tall task for the Pioneers. SHU took control from the first puck drop, winning the opening faceoff before sophomore Christos Caminis scored under 2 minutes into the game. The Pioneers added 2 more before the end of the period with goals from sophomores Matt Milko and Michael Cardoza. After a scoreless first 10 of the second, Caminis scored his second of the game and senior Justin Bernhard added one to make it 5-0. SHU was able to perfectly shut down the Engineers offense all day. Junior Corey Splaine secured the first regional shutout in school history, saving all 23 shots faced.

With the win, SHU advanced to face #4 UNH. The teams split their regular season matchups, with SHU taking home the win in the program's opening game at the Martire Family Arena. UNH was first on the board when they scored with 6 minutes remaining in the first. They scored twice more in the second to take a 3-0 lead, but there was no quit in the Pioneers. They score in the first 2 minutes of the third with a goal from Cardoza, assisted by Caminis. Caminis scored again on a power play in the 8th minute to pull the team within 1. They kept the Wildcats scoreless the rest of the period but weren't able to find the back of the net one more time to bring the season to an end. Student assistant coach Jon Fusaro said of the game, "It was a hard fought game; we weren't expecting the outcome to go our way at all, but after streamrolling RPI, it was business as usual. Although the season didn't end how we wanted it to, the boys fought back hard and left the rink leaving everything they had out on the ice, and that's more than any of us could ask for."

SHU finishes the season 17-8. They reached the Super East Collegiate Hockey championship final for the first time in school history, finishing second to Army. They had 3 all conference selections (Christos Caminis, Corey Splaine, James O'Toole) and 1 all regional selection (Caminis). They qualified for a third straight ACHA M2 Northeast Regional Tournament, advancing to the second round. When asked for his thoughts on the season, senior captain Max Mele said, "The season was a battle from the start to the end, with every player contributing to great wins. This team is full of talent that will continue to grow and build upon next season."
