ACHA D2 Stumbles During Weekend Slate

SHU ACHA D2 ice hockey went 1-2 on the weekend, dropping 2 road games and winning in the Martire Family Arena. They move to 5-3 so far on the season.

On Friday, the team headed up to Troy, NY to take on RPI. The Pioneers took an early lead off first period goals from sophomore Dylan Stiles and senior Matt Milko. RPI pulled ahead with an early goal in the second before freshman Alex Walsh brought us even with his second goal of the season. It was a tight third period, with both teams having opportunities to score. RPI was able to seal the win with a questionable power play goal in the final 4 minutes, sending the Pioneers home with a 4-3 loss.

The team was back home on Saturday to take on Merrimack College in the Martire Family Arena. The two teams were tied after one period off a goal from junior James O'Toole. The Pioneers added two more in the second while senior goaltender Colin Gaughran kept the visitors scoreless. SHU scored quickly in the third, when senior Solon Mihas and sophomore Luke O'Sullivan both picked up their first goals of the season. Merrimack scored late in the game but was unable to come back, securing the SHU victory 5-2.

Sunday was a rematch of the 2023 and 2024 SECHL Conference championship game, as the Pioneers headed to West Point to take on rival Army. As with their previous meetings, the game was back and forth when sophomore Thomas Franzosa scored the first Pioneer goal of the afternoon off assists from senior captain Christos Caminis and senior Michael Cardoza. The teams traded goals again in the second period to even the score at 2 going into the final frame. After a scoreless first half of the third, Army was able to score on the power play and ice the win with an empty net, taking the game 4-2.

The Pioneers are back at it this weekend when they head to Merrimack College on Saturday before hosting Rider University on Sunday.
