SHU ACHA D2 Ice Hockey took home 2 wins this weekend, including their home opener of the season. On Saturday, they faced Providence College in a rematch of the previous weekend. Junior Nick Milmore scored the first goal of the season in the Martire Family Arena to put the Pioneers up in the first period. Junior Matt Milko scored less than 2 minutes later to give the team a 2-0 lead after 1. After a scoreless second period from both teams, PC scored twice to tie the game with only 3 minutes remaining. After a battle in their own end, they were able to clear the puck out for sophomore defenseman Dylan Stiles to net the game winner at the buzzer. Senior goaltender Conor Higgins picks up his first win of the season, with a final score of 3-2.
The next day, the team traveled to the University of New Hampshire for the first match-up between the two teams of the season. Again, SHU was first on the board with 2 goals in the final 3:30 of the first period. They added 2 more in the second, including Stiles second of the weekend and team leading 4th goal of the season. UNH tried to stage a comeback in the third but the Pioneers were able to ice the game and come away with the win 6-2. Sophomore Mac Goggins and freshmen Alex Walsh and Will Martin all picked up their first career goals with the team in the win. Sophomore goaltender Matt Dworkowitz moves to 2-0 on the season and remains undefeated in net.
The team opens SECHL conference play this weekend when they head to Poughkeepsie, NY to face Marist College on Saturday, Oct 5th. Puck drop will be 4:15pm.
