Last weekend Sacred Heart D2 hockey was in action for SECHL playoffs at Montclair State University. On Saturday February 10th the Pioneers took on the Saints of Sienna College in the conference semifinals. Junior
Christos Caminis got the boys on the board, putting them up 1-0 in the first period. After a scoreless second period, freshmen Rob Moliterno needed less than a minute to get the scoring started in the third period before senior troy clement scored a few minutes later to put the Pioneers up by 3. Sienna cut the lead to two before senior
Nick Chiurazzi sealed the deal putting the Pioneers back up 3. Freshmen Matt Dworkowitz stood tall in net stopping 30 of 31 shots he faced. On Sunday February11th the Pioneers traveled back to NJ for a rematch of last year's SECHL conference championship against Army West Point's Black Knights. In a very defensive first period, the pioneers found themselves in a tied game with their sole goal being scored by junior
Christos Caminis. Caminis would find the back of the net yet again, 3 short minutes into the second period. The black knights would tie the game 5 minutes later where we would see a defensive back and forth game for the final 20 minutes. This game would require extra time to crown a champion, where the Pioneers would fall just short with west point sealing the deal 1 min 20 seconds into the extra frame. This would be the second time the Pioneers would fall in the conference championship in as many years. Sacred Hearts next game will be on Friday, February 23 at Keene State College to face the UConn Huskies in the first round of this year's Northeast Regional Tournament, in their last push to punch their tickets to the National Championship in St. Louis.
