This past weekend Sacred Heart D2 hockey was in action traveling to Troy, NY on Saturday to face the RPI Engineers, before hosting Central Connecticut State University while they honor their six seniors during their annual senior night.
On Saturday night against the Engineers, the Pioneers would strike first in the first period with a goal from junior
Matt Milko, but that would be far from enough with the engineers tying and taking the lead prior to the end of the first period. The Pioneers would not be able to get the ball rolling in this game, losing by a final score of 5-1.
On Sunday, the Pioneers were back at home to honor their six seniors against CCSU. The Pioneers started the game in untraditional manner, starting the game with six skaters and no goalie but changed on the fly to put junior
Colin Gaughran between the pipes. The Pioneers would get off to a slow start going into the second period in a scoreless tie. The Pioneers exploded in the first 8 minutes of the second with junior
Christos Caminis needing just 17 seconds to break the seal and get the team going. Senior
Jake Antonucci would give Sacred Heart a 2-0 lead before Caminis, freshman
Dylan Stiles and sophomore
James O'Toole would all score in a minute and a half span to give the Pioneers a 5-1 lead heading into the third period. Seniors
Gio Crepaldi and
Nick Chiurazzi would add to the score before freshman Matt Gandolfo would net his first career goal en route to a 8-1 win that also secured Sacred Heart the 2nd seed in the SECHL.Â
The Pioneers will be back in action for conference playoffs next Saturday at Montclair State University. As the 2 seed, SHU secures a quarterfinal bye. They take on the highest remaining seed in the semifinals Saturday at 8pm.
