Field Hockey Falls Short Despite A Great Defensive Effort

Fairfield, CT-  On Saturday, September 29th the University of Rhode Island came to play field hockey on Sacred Heart's home turf. Sacred Heart had a lot of energy at the start of the game and were ready to take on URI. The game started with a goal scored by a Pioneer forward, Julia Spagnoletti and assisted by forward, Jackie Champoux, on their first corner. All girls were playing with their HEARTS and did not give up one bit. Coach Gionna said to her girls, “You are playing with your HEARTS and with a PURPOSE”. The Pioneers defense had amazing clears out of the circle led by Stella Bragoni and Nicole Loken. Our goalie, Bridget Doherty, had just come back to play from suffering from an ankle injury, and she gave it her all. She had such amazing clears and new how to communicate with the girls. It was amazing to hear the fans and the cheers from the stands as these girls played on the field. URI was an aggressive team and we did not let that control us, however the Pioneers fell short, losing 1-3.

We look forward to playing this Friday, October 4th, against University of New Haven at Sacred Heart!
