D2 ice hockey opened the season with a sweep of SECHL opponent Siena College, winning on the road 4-3 and at home 6-2.
The Pioneers started the 2023-2024 season on the road at Siena College. Captain
Christos Caminis scored the first SHU goal of the season, putting the Pios up 1-0 going into the first intermission. Siena netted 3 unanswered in the second to take the lead before getting shutout in the third period. After a slow start to the final period, Pioneer freshman defenseman
Tyler Walles scored his first career goal with sophomore
Maxwell Brown scoring less than 2 minutes later to tie it at 3. The Pioneers were able to hang on and force overtime with Caminis netting the winning goal for his second of the night and the win.
Sunday, SHU hosted the Saints in a rematch of Friday's overtime victory. A quick goal from Siena out the Saints ahead early. Once SHU was able to settle, there was no looking back. Caminis again got it going for the
Pioneers, picking up his third goal of the weekend. Sophomore
James O'Toole scored to close the first period and put SHU ahead. SHU scored 3 unanswered goals in the second period. A slight hiccup gave the Saints another goal in the third, but freshman Rob Moliterno sealed the win with his first career goal. Junior goaltender
Corey Splaine added another 50 saves to his career total to start the season 2-0.
The Pioneers have a packed weekend as they hit the road for 3 games. First, they head to New Jersey on Friday for a SECHL matchup with Montclair State University. Saturday, they travel to Amherst to take on defending ACHA M2 National Champions UMass-Amherst. They wrap up the weekend against in state opponent UConn on Sunday.
