Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart DII AAU hockey team kicked off the spring semester with a win against Rutgers University on their home ice at the Martire Family Arena. The final score was 14-3, reflecting Sacred Heart's control over the game. However, the first period proved to be a bit of an uphill battle as Rutgers scored the first goal of the game. Going into the second period, the pioneers were up 3 to 2. They knew they had to come out strong in the second period in order to win. SHU put Rutgers on their back heels as they attacked throughout the second and third periods. In the words of head coach
Joseph Lane, "Goals flooded in" (Lane). A significant moment came when freshman,
Sam Weiner scored his first collegiate goal. The first-year was not alone in goal scoring. Ten other players on Sacred Heart scored against Rutgers as well.
Brendan Murphy,
Luke Botti and
Eddie Jackson led the pioneers in goals scored, as they each got 2 goals. The Pioneers will be back on the ice at Martire this Friday at 10:00 p.m. to face off against local rival Fairfield University.
