SHU vs STAC – Sport O Rama
The Pioneers traveled to Sparkill, NY on Friday night for an MCHC matchup with the Spartans. This was the first season matchup between the schools, and game one of the annual "Covid Cup" which is a best of three played between the Pioneers and STAC each season beginning in 2020. After coming out of the first period knotted at 2 apiece, the Pioneers turned it up a notch and scored 8 goals throughout the next two periods winning 10-2. After the game we had time to catch up with senior forward Austin Jellison and hear his remarks on the matchup.
AJ – "We came into this one knowing it was going to be a battle and they kept it close in the first. During the intermission I gave my linemate Ham (aka Brandon Cardelli) a little tap on the back and said it's about time you fix my +/- after penalty killing all year". Cardelli didn't say a word but went out on the ice to score his first career hat trick and help lead the Pios to victory.
SHU vs Wentworth – Wonderland of Ice
On Saturday the Pioneers hosted the Wentworth Leps for the first of two regular season matchups. The Pioneers looked to make a big statement in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, and they did just that. Late in the first period, junior defensemen Robert Goetze potted his third goal of the season putting the Pios up 1-0. In the second, the Pioneers scored two off the sticks of Thomas Howell and Lucca Conigliaro. Goaltender Andrew Capasso earned his second shutout of the season making some acrobatic saves to keep his team in the driver's seat. Freshman Ryan Martin earned player of the game for a good defensive performance and said, "If we're going to win a championship, these are the teams we are going to have to beat". On the way out we caught up with sophomore Lucca Conigliaro who was trying to sneak out the back to avoid any media attention. Conigliaro commented on the team's performance and stated "Well coach said if we won both games, we'd get our usual Monday night bag skate off. I think that motivated boys to work harder because no one likes getting on the line to do Herbies after every drill. I'm just excited to go back to NY, watch some football and have a nice homecooked meal before getting back to work on Wednesday".
The Pioneers look to continue their success this weekend 10/15/2022 as they host SUNY Maritime (1-1) at 8:30 on Saturday night at the Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport, CT.
