Chess - About Us

Sacred Heart University (SHU) Chess is looking for students with a passion for playing chess at the college level.  All interested students are invited to become members of the Chess Club. The top players from the club are selected to represent the university on the Chess Team(s).  Our top priority is the continued development and growth of a competitive team.  SHU offers a partial chess scholarship each year to qualified students.

Chess is a Sacred Heart University Club Sport which brings priority and focus to our chess program. SHU competes in numerous in-person and online tournaments each year.  Two tournaments of note are the Pan American Intercollegiate Chess Championship and the U.S. Amateur Team East.  SHU also competes in other regional and online tournaments.  Recent tournament results can be found on our news page.
SHU is always seeking opportunities to enhance the chess experiences of our student players. With that in mind, we are pleased to have established chess partnerships with:
  • Ian Harris, founder of RedBandit Chess and SHU Chess Coach, is a National Master with a peak rating of 2364. Ian specializes in helping SHU players maximize their chess abilities through a combination of 1-on-1 instruction, group workshops, game analysis and tournament coaching. He is also a USCF certified Senior Tournament Director and event organizer.
  • The Connecticut State Chess Association (CSCA), the official US Chess State Affiliate for Connecticut, organizes tournaments for all ages and skill levels, including for Connecticut universities and colleges.
Each year, the club hosts the Pioneer Open Chess Tournament on campus as well as other events.
