The Sacred Heart Women's Club Basketball Team opened the spring semester with two wins at UCONN on Sunday. The Pioneers won game one 58-55.
Dayna Mercogliano led the Pioneers in this game scoring a total of 15 points. Most notable was Mercogliano's two made free throw shots within the last 6.9 seconds of the game that secured the win for her team.
Elizabeth Portelli trailed close behind her teammate, scoring 14 points. Her 3-point play within the last 30 seconds of regulation time contributed towards the Pioneers' success. Other offensive contributions were made by
Taylor Gibbs with 12 points,
Alexa Medley with 7,
Alyssa Alfieri and
Skyler Felice with 4 each and
Shea Bertolacci with 2 points.
Sacred Heart left no crumbs in game two. The Pioneers went on a 14-2 run in the first half and won the game 58-40.
Taylor Gibbs led Sacred Heart offensively, scoring 16 points. Close behind her were
Carolyn Frankle and
Elizabeth Gonzalez with 7 points each,
Laurin Carbenneau and
Dayna Mercogliano with 5 points each,
Ava Ruggiero with 3, and
Kyleigh Short and
Grace Venezia with 2 points each.
Sacred Heart improves to 11-1 overall and 6-0 in league play. Sacred Heart travels to Fairfield on Friday and hosts Adelphi on Saturday at 11:30 for the Annual Pink Out game.
