Chess Grandmaster Alex Lenderman visits SHU Campus

Sacred Heart University Chess, in partnership with the Connecticut State Chess Association (CSCA), sponsored a chess lecture and simultaneous exhibition on the SHU campus on Saturday, August 10th. The event featured U.S. Grandmaster Alex Lenderman. Alex provided insights from some of his memorable games against top rated players in the world. Following the lecture, Alex took on 14 players in a simultaneous exhibition, winning 12 and drawing just 2 games. One of the draws was against SHU's #1 player NM Mark DeDona.

The day began with an Arena style tournament directed by Alex Lumelsky of the CSCA. This innovative format consisted of two hours of blitz games between 16 players. SHU's top three players finished 1st – 3rd, NM Mark DeDona, Brent McCreesh, and Joey Cyr.

In addition, GM Lenderman made sure to play a blitz game against each tournament player. Everyone had the thrill of facing off against a Grandmaster.

A big THANK YOU to Alex, the CSCA, and all the participants! Looking forward to our next campus event scheduled for November 3rd - our 4th annual Pioneer Open Chess Tournament. To learn more about SHU Chess please email chess@sacredheart.edu
