It was another winning weekend for the Sacred Heart D3 Hockey team as they defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday by the score of 10-5 and followed up with another win on Sunday vs Western Connecticut State University 7-1.
The Pioneers traveled up to Sparkle, New York on Saturday afternoon to face off against the 11-6 Spartans. STAC wasted no time scoring an early goals on Junior Ben Sfarra but the Pioneers answered back with four straight goals scored by Justin Bernhard, Zach MacLeod, Jeremiah Ryan, and Charles Tyrrell to close out the first period. The Spartans opened up the second period with two goals to come within one goal before Bernhard netted his second goal of the game. Freshman Conall Gately added a goal of his own with 6:19 left in the second period before the Spartans were able to tack on a goal for themselves. Sacred Heart continued their scoring dominance in the third period with goals from Lucia Conigliaro, Michael Angeletti, Brandon Cardelli, and Tyrell adding his second goal of the game.Â
On Sunday the Pioneers celebrated Senior's Robert Goetze, Stanley Duwal and Thomas Howell in their last home game at the Martire Family Arena as they faced off against in state foe Western Connecticut State University.Â
The Pioneers wasted no time scoring early on in the contest when Freshman Justin Bernhard found the back of the net three minutes into the contest. The wolves would answer with a goal of their own with 13:46 remaining in the first but that would be the only goal they'd get by Junior Jonathan Vitti who faced 13 shots on the day. The Pioneers would pour on six unanswered goals by Matteo Wilde, Brady Marszalek, Thomas Howell, Jack Reid (2), and Bernhard tallying his second goal of the game.Â
The Pioneers improved their season record to 17-1 overall and 12-0 in conference play with three contest remaining in the regular season. They travel to Newark, New Jersey this Saturday when they take on Stevens Institute of Technology at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House the official home of the New Jersey Devil's practice facility.
