Six SHU students came to the University of Bridgeport on September 20 for the 2025 CT Chess Open sponsored by the
Connecticut State Chess Association (CSCA). An event record 140 players competed in 5 sections. It was a very strong field with twelve titled players, including three grandmasters.
In the Open section, GM Jianchao Zhou won the event with a perfect 4.0. GM Sergey Kudrin finished second with 3.5/4.0. Last year's winner, SHU senior NM
Mark DeDona, finished in 8
th place out of 29 with 2.5/4.0.
In the U2100 section, SHU alum,
Joey Cyr, finished 16
th out of 28 players with a 1.5/4.0 score.
In the U1700 section, SHU sophomore,
Forde Todd finished 17
th out of 31 with a 2.0/4.0 score.
Robert Capodicasa, also a SHU sophomore, scored a 1.0/4.0.
In the U1200 section, three SHU players finished with 2.0/4.0 and tiebreak positions as follows. Freshman,
Sam Deeney, finished 11
th out of 34. Sophomore,
Michael Baker, finished 15
th. Senior,
Roman Pearl, finished 20
th.
