After sweeping a conference series vs University of Rhode Island on March 29th and 30th the Sacred Heart NCBA Club Baseball team hosted crosstown rival Fairfield University in what would be the team's biggest series of the season. The Pioneers needed two wins to secure the Chesapeake North Conference and their punch their ticket to Regionals.
Game One
Both teams were strong on hte hill on Saturday, but Sacred Heart defeated Fairfield 3-0. Zack Dezinski started the game for the Pioneers and recorded 19 outs. Dezinski surrendered five hits and zero runs over six and one-third innings, striking out eight and walking two in route to earning the victory.
Trevin Rieger appeared in relief for the Pioneers throwing two-thirds of an inning of perfect baseball.
A double by
Jayden Amador put Sacred Heart on the board in the bottom of the third. Amador drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Pioneers with two runs batted in. The right handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day.
Nicholas Scerbak,
Aldo Vittozzi, and Amador each collected one hit for the Pioneers.
Game Two
It cam down to the wire in game two, as Sacred Heart grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 4-3, over Fairfield. the game was tied at three in the bottom of the seventh when Dermot McSpedon doubled, scoring one run.
Nickolas Portanova led things off on the hill for the Pioneers. the southpaw surrendered six hits and three runs (one earned) over five innings, striking out six and walking three.
Justin Pesco and
Trevin Rieger each threw an inning of relief ball for the Pioneers.
McSpedon led the Pioneers with one run batted in. The infielder went 2-for-4 on the day. McSpedon and
Nicholas Scerbak each collected two hits. Sacred Heart ran wild on the base paths, collecting four stolen bases.
Game three of the series was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up at a later date. The Pioneers are back in action this weekend when they travel north to take on Quinnipiac in their final conference series of the spring.
